DESCRIPTION:
A
10-week noncredit course equips students with oral and aural skills to
communicate in simple English within the American context of ministry. The English for Ministry course fits within
the emerging field of English for special purposes. English for Ministry focuses on functional language tasks and
vocabulary common to workplace, notably church and community contexts. Through a variety of exercises that mirror
authentic situations, students learn the listening and speaking skills to
participate effectively.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Understand and use basic sentences for social
conversation in English
Participate in formal and informal dialogue inside and outside class
Writing and giving a personal testimony
Use vocabulary and language functions common to church, liturgy and community
contexts
Understand general vocabulary for Christian Education
Understand and translate short messages and texts into simple English
Understand general vocabulary for Bible Studies and devotionals
COURSE FORMAT:
Students
actively engage in different types of reading, exercises, small group work,
presentations, lectures, and discussions.

This
noncredit course is graded Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory. The following requirements are designed to
strengthen oral and aural English skills:
Class participation and preparation (weekly oral and written assignments)
Writing and giving a personal testimony
Planning a church function, i.e., luncheon and short missions trip
Preparing and giving a Bible Study
PREREQUISITES: Korean
language speaker.
RELATIONSHIP TO
CURRICULUM: Meets ESL requirement for graduation in Non-English degree
programs.
