MI530: Missiological Integration in Context (4/8 units)

DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this SIS practicum is to help the participants integrate their study in the context of intercultural relationships and practical learning, by participating in a five-week mission experience under the direction and supervision of a long standing professional ministry, Pioneers. Participants will engage in teaching TESOL in Vietnam. Participants will develop a personal approach to integration through an action-reflection approach.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

· Cultivate sensitivity to issues involved in cross-cultural learning and work
· Develop a holistic view of serving cross-culturally
· Integrate biblical and theological insights in praxis
· Develop cross-cultural sensitivity and an understanding of the role of culture
· Apply skills in teaching TESOL
· Implement skills of journaling & recording field-notes for use in reflection and study

 

COURSE FORMAT: Students who take MB553 Training TESOL Teachers being offered immediately prior to this practicum (or equivalent by permission of instructor) will receive 8 units of SIS practicum credit. (Those who have previously taken MB553 will receive 4 units of practicum credit.) This practicum will include: pre-field orientation and prayer gatherings in the spring quarter; group departure from LAX; a weekend workshop prior to commencing teaching on location; daily TESOL teaching with Pioneers; evening planning and debriefing sessions five nights per week; a debriefing retreat upon completion of the Pioneers practicum. Recreation and sightseeing will be included as appropriate.

ASSIGNMENTS:

1. Participate in workshops prior to the fieldwork.
2. Read relevant literature including the required texts (at least 1500 pages) and prepare an annotated bibliography.
3. Maintain a daily personal journal during the practicum.
4. Prepare lesson plans and teach TESOL daily.
4. Maintain accurate field-notes of the context and work while on location.
5. Contribute to regular group interaction times during the practicum.
6. Participate in a debriefing session after the practicum.
7. Write a 10-12 page paper integrating research, reading, and fieldwork.
· Additional Requirements for Th.M. students: Read and critique two additional context specific books using the perspectives from the practicum.

PREREQUISITES: MB553 Training TESOL Teachers (one-week intensive Aug 1-5) or equivalent by permission of instructor.
