DESCRIPTION:

This course is offered for students who need more practice with the language skills worked on in EL514.  It is designed to combine the content of a specified Individualized Distance Learning (IDL) course with a presentation of skills and strategies necessary for developing competency in academic research writing. Skills range from organizing a paragraph to writing a research paper, with a focus on the assignments of the IDL course.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

• Develop writing skills
• Develop writing style
• Gain experience in writing academic research papers

 

COURSE FORMAT:

Class time will be spent building writing skills using a variety of activities, including ESL and IDL content. In addition to the hours in the class, students will be expected to complete an additional hours of lab time which focuses on writing skills.

O'Donnell, Theresa and Judith Paiva. Independent Writing. Boston: Heinle & Heinle, 1993.

 

RECOMMENDED READING: None.

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

Homework assignments will be limited to the papers in the IDL course, which will vary from
term to term.  Students need to demonstrate a deeper level of mastery of English language skills
using different IDL assignments from those used for EL514.

 

PREREQUISITES: EL514: Academic Research and Writing I. Students must be concurrently registered in a specified IDL course and EL517: Writing Lab II.

 

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets partial requirements to advance from the ESL Program.

 

FINAL EXAM: Yes.
