DESCRIPTION:
This doctoral tutorial seminar is designed
for students who are doing research in Islamic Studies. The purpose of
the seminar is to assist them in developing an understanding of the key
theoretical works and resources relevant to their research and to engage them
in dialogue and critical feedback with peers who are pursuing similar research
interests.
LEARNING
OUTCOMES:
• Awareness of the most recent research and resources in
the field of Islamic Studies in general and each student’s specific research
topic in particular.
• The experience of critical interaction with peers on research in Islamic
Studies.
COURSE
FORMAT:
The seminar will meet eight times during the
quarter, three hours each session.
Initial sessions will be devoted to discussion of the state of
scholarship in the field and students will each give a written and oral report
on one of the books in the recommended reading. Subsequent sessions will include student presentations of their
proposals for research paper for faculty and peer review. The final version of the paper should be
40-55 pages, including notes, but excluding bibliography.
ASSIGNMENTS:
A paper of 40-55 pages, including notes, but excluding bibliography. Papers will be graded on a pass/fail basis,
with pass being a minimum of A-.
PREREQUISITES: A student must be
enrolled in the Th.M. Program, Doctor of Missiology, or Doctor of Philosophy
program. Written permission of instructor required for Th.M. students to
register.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: The eight-unit seminar is taken in lieu of an eight-unit tutorial and one of the required doctoral seminars.
