Lambers Fisher Jr. Hopes to Revitalize African-American Families

Lambers B. Fisher Jr., 23, was born in South Side Chicago, Ill., an only child raised in a single-parent home. He entered Fuller in the fall of 2001 after graduating from the University of Minnesota, where he was a leader in Alpha Omega (part of the Impact Movement, the African-American division of Campus Crusade for Christ). He is also a Jackie Robinson Foundation Alumnus, one of a select number of minority students across the country selected by the Jackie Robinson Foundation to receive a four-year college scholarship.

Fisher expects to graduate from Fuller this summer with an M.S. in marriage-and-family therapy. “For years I have felt a burden to help strengthen families, especially married and pre-married couples,” Fisher says.

“Growing up in a single-parent home, and seeing so many divorced couples, fatherless children, and dissatisfied marriages, I realized that something needed to be done to revitalize the institution of marriage and the family in the African-American community. Acknowledging that more African-Americans will be reached through the church than through a private-practice office, I sought a master’s-degree program that would help me learn how to integrate Christian faith with the marriage-and-family understanding that will help me most effectively strengthen black families.”

Fisher is currently engaged to Alicia N. Johnson and will marry in July 2003. In the fall, Fisher will begin studying for an M.Div. degree at Fuller.

“My desire has always been to impact marriages and families through the church,” Fisher says. “Now I realize that God has given me the gift of leadership, and that this burden can be realized through a leadership role in the church.”
