Katherine Miles Plans Return To Work With At-Risk Kids
Katherine Miles, from Oxford, England, received her M.A. in intercultural
studies from Fuller Seminary on June 14. Her passion and special interest
includes ministering to children at risk worldwide, a passion that was honed
during the 10 years she worked among impoverished children in Latin America.
She describes her years working with children in Latin America as “intense,” and
eventually she “needed the opportunity to reflect upon my experiences and gain
new tools and insights for ministry.” Her friend and mentor, Doug McConnell
(currently Fuller’s dean of the School of World Mission), advised her to enroll
at Fuller Seminary, which she did.
She did not leave ministry completely behind, however. Miles also serves as a
network consultant for Viva Network, a global movement of Christians caring for
children at risk. The network helps link those who work directly with children
to those who pray for and support those ministries.
Miles says Fuller taught her “the reality of pain and suffering in the world and
the depth of God’s grief over it – while at the same time his joy and pleasure
in the beauty of the world and the people in it.”
Following her graduation, Miles plans to return to her passion for empowering
and equipping Christians who work among children at risk. Specifically, she
intends to help train and prepare Christian workers for ministry with needy
kids.
“Fuller has given me the tools both academically, practically, spiritually, and
emotionally to re-engage in ministry in a more effective way,” she says. “It’s
been amazing to experience Fuller’s growing commitment to train people to work
with at-risk kids and youth. I’m excited to see Fuller become a premier location
for Christians who desire to be prepared to minister with needy kids over the
long haul.”
