A
Passion to Minister to Pastors Drives Heath Greene
Heath Greene, along with his wife, Andrea, left his home in North Carolina to
attend Fuller Seminary in 1997. He chose Fuller because of the school’s
commitment to integrate psychology and Christian faith into its training.
“I also chose Fuller because it was the place we felt God was calling us and
because Fuller is second-to-none in terms of its ability to help students pursue
God fervently with academic excellence and authenticity,” Greene says.
Greene expects to graduate this summer with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology (he
also earned an M.A. in Christian leadership in 2001). He
quickly credits his wife for making it possible. “Andrea has been my partner not
just in marriage, but in helping me complete my degree,” he says. “She worked
full-time during my time at Fuller and was a constant source of support and
encouragement. Andrea embodies God's grace and abundant love for me.”
Over the course of his studies, Greene focused on group therapy and men’s issues,
two issues he describes as “exciting and life-giving.” And he credits the
practical, therapeutic experience he gained at Fuller for preparing him well for
his counseling career.
“Fuller is well networked within Southern California, and because of that, I
was always able to get the kind of clinical placement I wanted,” Greene says. People
like Professor Arch Hart gave me the opportunity to work with groups of pastors,
a group of people I hope to serve one day. Additionally, Fuller has an excellent
clinic, Fuller Psychological and Family Services, that gave me the chance to
grow in my clinical skills and experience.”
Greene is currently seeking a private practice in which to work. “I hope to work
with couples in restoring marriages and in groups with pastors and their
spouses,” Greene says. “Pastors are often very isolated and lonely, and I have a
strong desire to encourage them. I also hope to apply much of my research work
in men’s issues. Through therapy, I hope to help men express themselves more
fully emotionally and to connect more intimately with the people around them.”
Greene and his wife have one daughter, Olivia, who is 2 years old.
