A Resource for Journalists
Graduate Augusto Rodriguez Serves
Hispanic Congregation in North Hollywood Augusto
Rodriguez graduated from Fuller for the second time on June 14 and earned his
third degree. Having received a master of arts in theology and a master of arts
in intercultural studies in 1999, he received a Ph.D. in intercultural studies.
Originally from El Salvador, Rodriguez enrolled in Fuller in 1994 after becoming
head pastor of the Ministerio Nuevo Vivir Church, an American Baptist-affiliated
congregation in North Hollywood. With his new position, he recognized the need
for further theological preparation and enrolled in Fuller’s Hispanic Church
Studies Department.
After a year off following completion of his M.A. degrees, Rodriguez returned to
Fuller to pursue doctoral research on the growth of “New Apostolic” churches in
the Los Angeles area.
Rodriguez points to his contact with renowned missionaries and theologians like
Dr. Pablo Deiros, Dr. Chuck Van Engen, and Dr. Eddie Gibbs as a highlight of his
time at Fuller. “They have shaped my life and my missiological thinking,” he
says.
In addition, Rodriguez says the diversity of the Fuller community has exerted a
profound influence on his thinking. “Interacting with people from so many
different places has helped me to understand people in a different way. And the
Fuller’s rich diversity, both culturally and denominationally, has opened my
mind regarding theology and the church.”
While Rodriguez continues to serve as full-time pastor, he is also interested in
teaching and plans to continue his research and writing. He hopes to publish his
dissertation, as well as a number of articles.
Rodriguez and his wife, Lizzete, have three children: David, 15; Danny, 13; and
Denise, 7.
