NS501: NEW TESTAMENT 2.  Edwin Nelson.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

 

DESCRIPTION:

This course will provide an overview of the basic introductory matters and themes of Acts through Revelation. We will be examining the historical-cultural settings of the texts in order to assist us in establishing the background of each document.   By considering the situation of the writer as well as the intended audience, we can gain more understanding which will benefit our personal and pastoral lives.

 

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:

This course aims to provide a basic understanding of the designated New Testament writings. Understanding those writings is foundational for the conduct of any Christian ministry.

 

COURSE FORMAT:

The course will meet on ten successive weeks. Each student is expected to come to class prepared by reading assigned materials.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Students must be prepared by reading assigned materials in preparation for class.  In addition, there will be five assignments:

1.        With each class session, the student needs to turn in an index card indicating what they have read since the last session.  Failure to read all assignments for the course will result in at least a ½ letter grade reduction.  Worth 15 % of your grade.

2.        Map quiz- each student must be able to identify selected cites/towns, regions, bodies of water on a blank map of the Roman Empire in New Testament Times (almost blank).  Worth 10% of your grade.

3.        The development of 3 five-page studies on three NT documents.  Choose from one of the Prison Epistles, from one of the General Epistles, and Hebrews. Worth 45% of your grade.

4.        There will be a take-home final exam.  Worth 30% of your grade.

None.

Meets M.Div. core requirement in New Testament (NT1); M.A.: Biblical studies; MACL: NT core.
